About a month ago, the folks at Piibu reached out to see if I wanted to try out their monthly mask subscription service and of course I agreed. If you have been following me for any length of time, especially on Instagram, you will know that I love sheet masks. I have been incorporating sheet masks into my skin care regimen for the past 10 years or so and believe that sheet masks make a huge difference in how my skin looks and feels. I have been excited to see more and more sheet mask subscription boxes pop up over the past year, making them more accessible to anyone. I remember years ago when it was difficult to get any Asian beauty products here in the States but not anymore!
Piibu (pronounced pee-boo) means "skin" in Korean and is a monthly mask subscription service that sends around 8 different masks directly to your door. Each month's box highlights a particular skin care theme for example like masks that focus on brightening or soothing so each month will be unique. Piibu offers three different plans, a month to month, a 3 month and 6 month and the monthly cost starts at $15 per month plus shipping (a grand total of $19). Each month's box is said to be a retail value of $35 +.
The box itself was sturdy and colorful. Tucked inside and carefully wrapped in tissue paper were 8 different masks from well known kbeauty brands. I did not receive a information card but in the various posts I've been reading regarding this sub box, you do get an info card. This card features information about the masks, what their main function is said to be as well as some skin care tips. Again, I most likely didn't receive a card because I was sent a box for review purposes.
Here are the masks that were included in the February 2017 Box:
1. Dermal Royal Jelly Collagen Essence Mask
2. Daiso Coenzyme Q10 Collagen Mask
3. Girl's Generation Stem Cell Mask
4. Innsifree It's Real Squeeze Black Berry Mask
5. A'Pieu White Milk One Hydrating Pack
6. Ekel Aloe Ultra Hydrating Essence Mask
7. Skinfood Tea Tree Secret Spot Patch
8. Leaders Daily Wonders Bye Bye to Dry Intense Hydrating Mask
After looking through the assortment of masks and doing some math in my head (which is painful), I honestly do not see where this box can be a retail value of $35+. I am not sure what retail value they are placing on these masks but let's take a look. I can get the Daiso mask which come in a box of 3 or 5 (I can't remember) for $1.50. Second, Dermal and Ekel masks can usually be found at a local H-mart (Korean supermarket) for about $1 and the Girl's Generation mask is about $1-3 a piece on Amazon but come in a set of 8. I am not stating that any these masks are bad masks but I am trying to wrap my head around this whole idea of a $35+ value. The Leaders, A'pieu, Innisfree and the Skinfood pimple patches are the saving grace of this box and I am looking forward to trying these out.
After researching, I would say that this box is worth the $19 ($15 plus shipping) you pay however in my opinion, it is not worth anything over this amount. My only exception is those that live in areas where you cannot easily access Korean sheet masks. I am thankful that I live in an area (and travel to Los Angeles often) so I can easily find shops that sell kbeauty masks and better, we live in a digital world that makes shopping for Asian beauty so much easier than even 5 years ago. If I lived in an area without any stores close by, I'd consider signing up for this service but would opt for the 6 month plan because it brings the price down a little to $14 plus shipping, making the cost align more with what you could buy these masks for elsewhere.
So, sorry for the rambling but I wanted to give you some insight into how I wanted to approach this review because I do not think it's a bad subscription box. For those just starting out with using sheet masks, this would be a great option that would enable you to test out popular kbeauty brand masks. It is also something nice you can do for yourself every month because honestly who doens't like getting a surprise package in the mail :) I am also a huge proponent of self care and spending 10-30 minutes a few times a week to pamper yourself is good for the skin and soul.
Stay Beautiful ❤️
