Review: Herbivore Coco Rose Lip Conditioner

If you have been following my blog or Instagram, you will know that I am a bit obsessed with lip products. I have fairly thin lips that are dry, often cracked, and have a rough texture. The main reason for my lip condition is that I have asthma and am a mouth breather. One tip I always share for those that suffer from similar lip conditions like mine is to use very hydrating and moisturizing lip products. The more moisture and hydration you add, lips will not only be soft and smooth but moisture will help plump the skin, making the lips appear fuller.

About a month ago, Herbivore was having a sale and offering a 20% off discount. So, of course, it was the perfect time to order some products that I had been wanting to try.  This post will be reviewing the CoCo Rose Coconut Oil Lip Conditioner.

About the brand:
Herbivore is founded by husband and wife duo Alex and Julie out of their kitchen in Seattle Washington. Their philosophy is to produce safe and non-toxic products that are effective. "We believe in the power of nature to bring these results".  Herbivore uses natural ingredients, plant based food grade, cold pressed, GMO-free soy wax, recyclable and reusable packaging and many of their products are certified organic.

The Claim:
Herbivore claims that this is a lightweight lip conditioner will deeply nourish, hydrate, protect, smooth and soften lips.

Patch Testing:
Every product I use goes through a very detailed patch testing period. I always patch test and I recommend patch testing to everyone. Although there is an argument out there that patch testing doesn't actually work seen here on The Beauty Brains, patch testing has saved my skin from some pretty serious negative reactions. Although I do agree with TBB (and love this podcast btw) that patch testing does not work against evaluating whether a certain product will cause breakouts, patch testing will help determine if your skin is allergic to the ingredients. This type of negative reaction is seen in the form of itching/stinging, intense flushing, burning, rash or hives.

I introduce new skin care products to my easily irritated skin by patching testing. Patch testing can look different for everyone but for me, I test products in stages. For lip products, it is very difficult to patch test lip balm. I usually put a tiny bit in the corner area of my lips as this is the area I get the most irritation and dryness. If no reaction occurs, I begin using the lip product all over.

Packaging:
This lip conditioner is in a 5ml / 0.17 oz glass pot.

Full Ingredients:
Full list of ingredients:Hydrogenated Soybean Oil (Non-GMO Soy Wax), Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Cocos Nucifera (Virgin Coconut) Oil, Orchid Root Extract, Rose Damascena (Moroccon Rose) Absolute, Coconut Pulp CO2, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Oil, Red Iron Oxide

Coconut Oil - is rich in fatty acids, lauric acid (fatty acids, antimicrobial) and proteins with help nourish and strengthen the lips.

Moroccan Rose Absolute - rose is a natural anti-inflammatory and is naturally hydrating.

Formula, Texture & Scent:
I am over the moon for rose scented products so I personally love the scent of this balm. If you are not a rose fan, save your money and don't buy this product because you will be sadly disappointed. The rose scent is fairly strong and doesn't fully dissipate. The formula is pretty concentrated so a little goes a long way. Also, I have found that with some lip balms, once they warm up on the lips they tend to get an oily feeling. I was worried that this formula, because of the ingredients, would become an oily mess that bleeds into the skin around my mouth. Some balms bleed so much that it ends up getting into my mouth. Yuck! Luckily, this does not turn too oily and has little bleeding. One thing that makes this lip conditioner stand out is that it doesn't leave the lips looking shiny as it's a pretty matte formulation. This would be great for those looking for a lip balm that doesn't look glossy.

Performance:
This is a dense balm consistency that adds a decent amount of hydration and moisturization. After hearing so much buzz about this lip conditioner, I thought it would be more hydrating.  However, I don't find this very moisturizing. I do feel that this is very lightweight, smells divine and offers a semi-matte finish.

Final Thoughts:
I bought this lip conditioner as a product that I could use at night, like a lip mask to protect my lips while I sleep from my excessive mouth breathing. At first, I liked this balm, mainly because of the scent and because it wasn't oily and it was highly concentrated. But unfortunately, I didn't find this lip conditioner very moisturizing or hydrating. On a positive note, I do use lip balms during the day and reapply often and sometimes I don't want glossy or shiny lips. I really enjoy that this gives the lips a semi-matte finish and offers light hydration throughout the day. Not sure if I would repurchase because I do prefer the Burt's Bees Honey Lip Balm as it gives me the same semi-matte look, is a lot more moisturizing, hydrating plus it's so much cheaper.
