Review: Juara Clove & Turmeric Serum

I am very excited to review Juara's Clove Flower & Turmeric Anti-Aging Serum today. I have been testing this serum for about five, almost six weeks and I must say, I am impressed. While I mostly blog about Korean (or Asian) skincare, I have a soft spot for natural and/or organic skincare. Regardless, I choose skincare products based on ingredients, formulation and whether a particular product will be effective in treating my specific skin care concerns. As with Juara, this serum collected a panel research study regarding the efficacy of this particular product. When I read that after a 4 week period, 87% of women saw an improvement in their skin tone. If you have been following my blog or Instagram, improving skin tone, fading post acne scars and hyper-pigmentation is my biggest concern.

A little about Juara:
Juara is a skin care based on centuries' old, Indonesian botanical tradition called Jamu. Juara uses secret receipts blending natural ingredients for healthy skin. All products are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates or artificial colors or fragrances. They are also 100% vegetarian, cruelty free and do not test on animals. "JUARA combines ancient beauty rituals and herbal medicinal practices with the best of modern science to create a luxurious and indulgent problem-solution range of skincare and body care products" from website!

The Claim:

This serum promises to help brighten and even out skin tone, giving you a brighter, healthy glow. This highly concentred serum combines clove and turmeric to provide powerful anti-imflammatory properties plus helps protect the skin from free radicals damage. This serum also claims reduce redness, smooth, firm lift and tighten.

To start, I like to begin all reviews with stating my skin type and concerns. I also like to mention YRMV, a basic disclaimer. My skin type during this time of the year (spring) is combination. My skin can be quite sensitive, temperamental and acne prone. However, with the incorporation of Curology treatment and more recently, Differin seen here, my skin seems to be less prone to breakouts but more prone to dehydration and flakey skin. My review will reflect how this product works for my personal skin type and condition but as always, your results may vary (YRMV).

Patch Testing:

Every product I use goes through a very detailed patch testing period. I always patch test and I recommend patch testing to everyone. Although there is an argument out there that patch testing doesn't actually work seen here on The Beauty Brains, patch testing has saved my skin from some pretty seriously negative reactions. Although I do agree with TBB (and love this pod cast btw) that patch testing does not work against evaluating whether a certain product will cause breakouts, patch testing will help determine if your skin is allergic to the ingredients. This type of negative reaction is seen in the form of itching/stinging, intense flushing, burning, rash or hives.

I introduce new skin care products to my easily irritated skin by patching testing. Patch testing can look different for everyone but for me, I test products in stages. For this, I applied it to my more sensitive areas which happens to be my neck, chest and behind my ears for a few days. If all goes well, I begin to use the product all over.

Packaging:
This serum comes in a 28 ml / 1.0 fl oz study plastic container with a pump. I absolutely love the dark amber bottle and the beautifully designed graphics. The gold detail is so pretty! The size of the serum could be a concern to some because this is on the expensive side however, the formula is very concentrated so a little goes a long way. I only use 1 pump, maybe 1 1/2 pumps per application.

Full Ingredients:
Water, Chondrus crispus (Red Algae) Extract, Hydrolyzed Chondrus Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Glycerin, Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-14, Lycium barbarum (Goji Berry) Fruit Extract, Butylene Glycol, Ethoxydiglycol, Eugenia carophyllus (Clove Flower) Extract, Citrullus lanatus (Watermelon) Fruit Extract, Pyrus malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Lens esulenta (Lentil) Fruit Extract, Bambusa vulgaris (Gold Bamboo) Leaf/Steam Extract, Pisum sativum (Pea) Extract, Glucosamine HCl, Plankton Extract, Xanthan Gum, Maltodextrin, Phyllanthus emblica (Aamla) Fruit Extract, Tetrahydrocurcuminoids, Ferulic acid, Di-Potassium Glycyrrhizinate, Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Sodium PCA, Sodium Lactate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Levulinate, Potassium Sorbate.

Now the fun part....yes I am a total ingredients geek!

Turmeric is traditionally used for its' health benefits primarily because of curcumin, a bioactive component. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and has been shown to heal, decrease inflammation and oxidation. Studies have found that turmeric can positively affect tissue and collagen, speeding up healing in wounds. People who suffer from eczema also rave about turmeric along with the National Psoriasis Foundation as well as the many credible fibromyalgia associations all recommending turmeric to help control inflammation, flare ups and decrease pain. I have personally started taking a turmeric supplement to help relieve my fibromyalgia symptoms.

Clove helps to brighten and even out skin tone by inhibiting melanin production. It has also been shown to reduce aging related to the breakdown of collagen and elastin as well as it is a potent antioxidant.

This also contains sea algae and hyaluronic acid (hydrating, protecting), goji fruit extract (antioxidant), pea extract (natural exfoliant) and palm peptide which helps promote healing and collagen/elastic production.

Formula, Texture and Scent:
This is a light weight gel serum that is oil free, absorbs quickly and leaves no residue behind. I really enjoy how light this serum is and that it has a nice slip to the formula, making it is easy to spread on the skin. Another great point is after application, this serum completely disappears into the skin. If you are someone like me who loves layering your skin care products, having something that is super lightweight is ideal.  As you can see from the picture above, this transparent serum has a light brown or amber color. It also has natural fragrance that reminds me of a clove but more herbal although the scent is very subtle and dissipates very quickly. I have read that some people find that the formula has an instant tightening or firming effect but I did notice but was not uncomfortable, especially since I apply other skin care products over this serum.

Overall:
I think this is a great serum that is perfect for all skin types. I was actually very surprised how greatly this serum reduced my redness! I am not red all the time but the middle of my cheek always seems to have a hue of pink. Using this serum at least once per day almost eliminated those pink cheeks. Further, I found that the redness associated around blemishes was greatly reduced. I found that those hormonal breakouts during TTOTM healed much quicker with incorporating this serum daily.

Another big difference I saw in my skin was that my complexion was brighter and more even toned. I definitely noticed when I did use this serum because my skin didn't seem to have that glow to it. Another positive is that this serum improved my texture. My skin became super soft and my other products seems to work better and absorb more thoroughly with continual use. Since incorporating this serum into my skincare routine, I have had a ton of people comment on how good my skin looks...who doesn't love that!

Final Thoughts:
This serum is a bit expensive, more than I would normally pay for a serum but if you are looking for a natural and effective serum to help reduce redness, brighten, improve texture and firm, you need to try out Juara!
